Deconstructing Tony

Heather Havrilesky raises a fair question in her analysis of “The Sopranos” finale:

As the screen went black in the middle of a line from the song “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey, it was hard not to wonder, Is Chase brilliant for so thoroughly subverting our expectations, or… is he just an asshole?

  1. He’s lazy and out of ideas. Click over for my take on last night.

  2. We’ll have to agree to disagree. But maybe I’m just being too protective of David Chase — and has there ever been a truly satisfying final episode of a TV drama?

  3. I loved the Six Feet Under finale and found it very satisfying. (Though maybe that was because I’d gotten all the dissatisfaction out of my system a few episodes earlier when Nate died.) I was quite pissed off about last night’s right when it happened but now I’ve settled down to mere annoyance.

After reflecting on it, I have to say that although it was not totally fulfilling, I don’t mind it either – letting the imagination fill in the blanks. Phil got whacked (with added insult to injury), and that was good.

As for satisfying final episodes, I’d have to go with Newhart and of course, the Young Ones.
