The GOP war on science, Exodus edition

Via Politico:

Under the new plank, the Texas GOP recognizes “the legitimacy and efficacy of counseling, which offers reparative therapy and treatment for those patients seeking healing and wholeness from their homosexual lifestyle.”

The American Psychological Association and other major health organizations have condemned such counseling, which generally try to change a person’s sexual orientation or to lessen their interest in engaging in same-sex sexual activity. The groups say the practice should not be used on minors because of the danger of serious psychological harm.

  1. The research on identical twins convinces me that there is a biological component to sexuality. But just last week a friend’s 16 year old daughter said she knew at least 10 girls who had “gone lesbian” after a bad breakup with a guy. And the actress Cynthia Nixon said that for her, being gay is a “choice”. Maybe there is a small percentage of gays who really aren’t gay.
And what about transgendered? They have sex organs and DNA which conclusively establish their sex, yet insist that they are “trapped” in the wrong body. Could they benefit from counseling rather than surgical mutilation? 25% of sex-change operation subjects (gender re-assignment, whatever) express the desire to reverse the process. That is a ghastly number.
