Gay MSNBC anchor something of a buffoon

Courage is contagious. I have felt that way since coming out publicly in 2006. I’ve never regretted it.

This November, I will co-host Miss Universe in Moscow partly because it is a huge, visible opportunity for LGBT people. Everywhere.

Thomas Roberts, like any true journalist would, says he fought hard for the chance to co-host the cartoonish anachronism.

My thinking was that it’s such a large, visible opportunity. It’s saying, in over 190 countries, to a billion people, that we have a place at the table, we have a seat, and why give that up?

A gay man at a beauty pageant? This is historic.

We must be visible, we must show up, and, as Harvey Milk said, we must “give them hope.”

I go to prove there’s hope.

How brave.
