One celebrity’s compliment is another man’s insult

Jake Gyllenhall, discussing his role in “Brokeback Mountain” with “Inside the Actors Studio” host Mary Hart James Lipton, said he took the gay rumors as a “huge compliment.”

How so? You’re born gay, you don’t choose it. Why praise something one has no control over?

I’m not picking on Gyllenhall (his mom was one of my favorite professors at USC), but I find such toadying by celebs a bit patronizing.

  1. It’s like being proud to be American. Again, one had no choice in the matter: one is born wherever one’s mother happens to be at the time. That said, I’m going to go with this assumption: Gyllenhaal admires the qualities of and respects the characters of many people he knows whom happen to be gay, and he feels that if others see in him similar qualities/character as possessed by the gay people he admires/respects, that’s a flattering observation…? Yes? I actually think the only movie of his I’ve seen is “Brokeback Mountain,” now that I think of it.
