Exposing a malcontent’s naivete, 10 years later

After 9/11 I was convinced things were going to change. The culture would be relevant again, I thought. More naively, I believed patriotism would no longer be cheapened by the garish excesses of halftime shows and the like.

Instead we got Hooray for Everything with a condescending twang.
