Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Monday compared the mosque planned to go up blocks away from ground zero in New York to Nazis protesting next to the Holocaust museum. …
“Nazis don’t have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust museum in Washington,” Gingrich insisted, speaking of the museum where just a year ago a guard was killed by a white supremacist trying to enter the building with a gun.
Back in May Gingrich compared Democratic party leaders to Nazis.
But in his book, Gingrich went even farther than calling Democratic leaders socialist – a phrase used so often during the health care debate that it has almost lost its shock value – writing that they represent a threat just as dangerous as Nazi Germany.
The assertion struck Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace as “wildly over the top,” which he told Gingrich when he asked the Georgia Republican to defend the statement on Sunday.
No one who makes the Nazi comparison deserves to be taken seriously. But if rhetorical carpet bombing is what it takes to secure the GOP nomination, Gingrich will gladly participate.
