Here's a photo of several blocks of Decatur Street running through GSU from Wikipedia before narrowing. Spot the pedestrian! I count 6 on Decatur Street, one every 20-30 yards.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_State_University

To expand on cost/benefit. This project cost several million dollars. $6 million was allocated, I believe, in mostly city money, with some contribution from GSU. The stated goals were safety and beautification.

Could these not have been met more effectively and efficiently with (1) red light cameras to inhibit aggressive drivers on Decatur Street; (2) a crossing guard to help pedestrians cross safely (and inhibit aggressive jaywalkers); (3) more greenery (a promise this project did not keep); (4) more parking at Marta stations; (5) a down payment on a Marta extension; (6) downtown shuttles.

Instead we got: (1) traffic diversion to other city thoroughfare; (2) more congestion on Decatur St. ; (3) painted stripe medians (the promised tree lined ones, it turned out, didn't allow buses to turn); (4) a more dangerous traffic flow in which drivers are funneled at both ends from two blocks into one (encouraging deliberately bad driving), and then have to slalom around painted medians in between (encouraging inadvertently bad driving); (5) a mottled patchwork of black asphalt, off-white sidewalks and concrete of a third color in between, incongruously wedged in as a buffer zone mostly not walkable due to built-in obstructions.

Or better yet, the money could have helped Georgia State fix the former city street already given over to it, Wall Street. If there is a worse cared for road in downtown Atlanta I have not seen it--rim bending, ankle twisting potholes the size of foxholes. The city should have told GSU's former president, "Interesting article. New 'paradigm' with Decatur Street as ersatz campus quad/service road instead of the main Decatur-Atlanta thoroughfare that it was when the founders decided to build there. We get that, but fix what you've got before you ask for more."

Ms. Flocks, I still marvel at this comment. The sweet music of your ideal deafens you to what others are saying. I said "even at peak hours" the sidewalks along GSU were not crowded. And they weren't. Not by the standards of a true pedestrian city (London, Singapore, New York). Not even by Atlanta standards. I worked there. I walked them. I drove past them. I shared the right of way with drivers when I walked, and with walkers when I drove (even when they displayed an arrogance toward road rules that is more marked along Decatur Street than in almost any street I can think of in the many cities where I have lived). You also miss why the congestion bothered me--it wasn't natural. It wasn't organic. It was manufactured. It was paid for with millions of dollars in tax monies. It helped pinch the GSU budget such that before the road was even finished, my sister was paying higher fees and cafeteria costs and being asked to think of ways to pinch pennies on the university website. I'm open to the idea of a road narrowing being to the good, as along Broadway in NYC. I want Atlanta to be a more pedestrian and rapid transit city. What I don't want is influential interests pushing through self-aggrandizing projects to the cheers of idealogues without a sober assessement of costs (including people hours) versus benefits, competing fiscal priorities, and ability to deliver on promises. The Decatur Street failed by all these measures.

Gallagher (won) was actually pretty funny when he wasn't doing the "Sledgomatic" bit.

Back in the very early 80's we had a Gallagher record, and it was funny as hell. (for the time.) We listened to it almost every day one summer while we played pool in the garage. I had it practically memorized. Plus there was a woman in the audience with an effed up laugh and she would still be laughing when everyone else was silent. So he started making fun of her as part of the show. I remember he said "I hope she doesn't laugh like that in the bedroom. Well, it's ok if you laugh.......just don't point!" She sounded almost like a seal. I guess you had to be there. :-)

He belongs in the comic hall of fame if for nothing else, all his props. I still want one of those adult sized "Big Wheels" he had built. I LOVED mine as a kid!! Though I'd prolly look silly as hell tooling around the neighborhood

 Ok....done shitting. STAY HARD LEO!!!

scott: what, so conservatives don't act like slobs farting during interviews? I suspect anyone who's ever interviewed Rush Limbaugh would disagree. In fact I'll bet if you took a poll of slobs who fart during interviews, an overwhelming majority of them would also espouse conservative views. As for the pot, that sort of hypocrisy is also a standard conservative trait; publically condemn drugs and 'junkies' while secretly feeding personal heavy narcotic addictions (again, see Rush Limbaugh for the poster boy of that sort of behavior)

I moved here in 2004 - I don't have the data at hand, but I've been hearing about 'pass this' 'pass that' for special taxes almost every year, at the county, city, and state level. Yet I haven't seen a whole heck of a lot done. Meanwhile, just down the street from my house, the contractors hired by Cobb County put SIX lights at a four way intersection, apparently because there are two houses with driveways that dump out at the edges of the intersection. So NOW, that intersection is far worse, with all four actual traffic lanes at a dead stop while the light controls cycle through the two driveways. A profound lack of common sense in spending public funds scares me.
