Perhaps. I love Bottle Rocket and Rushmore and like Royal Tennenbaums but everything since then has been a bit too precious. I’m many things, but not precious.
Even the Coen brothers fail about 50% of the time, and they have real talent. Anderson keeps hoping that by throwing paint on the wall, a picture will emerge, but it doesn’t. He is no different than a monkey with a typewriter.
Saw this movie the other night and completely agree with your assessment. This article in Slate appears to point the way toward’s a reason for the success of the earlier films and the subsequent move towards “preciousness.”
