I don’t begrudge the president time on the links, nor do I have a problem with the First Family taking the occasional vacation. But what kind of message is sent when the First Lady and 40 of her friends jet off the Spain in the middle of a recession?

Whether or not the taxpaying American will be paying for meals, they will definitely be footing the bill for the First Lady’s 68-strong security detail, her personal staff – and the use of presidential jet Air Force Two.

Why not a getaway to the Gulf Coast, which is hemorrhaging vacationers? A visit from Michelle Obama might have helped jump start the region’s sagging economy.

The Obamas have plenty of years to enjoy a lavish overseas getaway. Now is not the time.
