'Humility is no substitute for a good personality' Fran Lebowitz

Get over yourself, Rolling Stone

Kudos on the McChrystal article, but Jann Wenner’s print celebration of all things plastic is far from hip. Matt Taibbi’s snide dispatches rarely impress, and movie “critic” Peter Travers is a eager whore.

*MIAMI VICE: “If you’re looking for a crime story that sizzles with action, sex and the visceral jolt of life on the edge, Miami Vice is the one.”

*MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3: “This summer M:i:III is the movie to beat in the race to push your pulse rate past the danger zone.”

*POSEIDON: “It’s a blast. Poseidon hits the action button and never stops!”

*SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS: “Uproarious…fiendishly funny! The laughs come with a sting! Thornton and Heder keep you howling. Jon Heder orbits past his Napoleon Dynamite character at last by getting seriously fierce! A hot and rowdy funfest! Ben Stiller is in top form.”

Ninety percent of the magazine reads like “Entertainment Tonight” with curse words. Don’t believe their hype.

Matt Taibbi was usually a good read when he was at his old venue, the name of which escapes me. His name is pronounced the same as Tybee, as in island. That should count for something.

Russ Douhat is pretty good. But then you would have to read National Review.

By the way, my paper ran a half-page story on Robert Byrd yesterday, using words like “hero”, but never mentioning that he was a Grand Kleagle in the Klan. The article was AP, written by Andrew Taylor. After all the pork Byrd pumped into West Virginia, why are they still so goddamned poor? Because, as we all know, liberal policies are bullshit. 45 years after the “War on Poverty” commenced, all we have to show for it is a huge hole in our monetary system. If it doesn’t work, why keep repeating it? This is, of course, one definition of insanity.

Also in the same edition was a smiling Elena Kagan, under a banner “Kagan Pledges Restraint, Impartiality as Justice.” The first paragraph ended “.. as she braced for a grilling by Republicans who suggest she’d let liberal views color her her rulings.” The article was AP, written by Julie Hisrschfield Davis. The clear implication is that liberals are persons of conscience who would never let their political views color their applicatio of the law. But who were the dissenters in the McDonald opinion, handed down Monday, affirming that the Second Amendment, like all the others, applies to the states through the application of the Fourteenth Amendment? And you liberals act is if we conservatives are simply paranoid.

This is the kind of slanted bullshit conservatives have had to put up with for 40 years. And you guys wonder why Rush Limbaugh has an audience. If the newspapers had done their job, no one ever would have heard of Rush Limbaugh, Foxnews, or the ever kookier elements of the far right.

As for McChrystal, there is more than one way to get out of a losing cause. The other way is to quit. Remember, McChrystal was hand-picked by Obama. Bur Obama doesn’t really give a shit about what happens in Afghanistan. He is pulling out next July, causing Karzi to cozy up to the Taliban. What the fuck kind of foreign policy is THAT? Good for MCChrystal for a modicum of honesty. And everyone knows Joe Biden in fact IS a joke. The truth shouldn’t get you fired. So now the guy MoveOn.org called “General Betrayus” is once again called upon to save us from ourselves. This time, he will fail, because Obama, unlike Bush, will not give him the tools to do the job.
