Tango and Ass

Will Smith, a.k.a. Mr. Family Friendly, actively indoctrinates future Scientologists at the school he founded with wife Jada Pinkett Smith. So why is he so beloved?

the year my habit broke

I haven’t seen a movie in a theater since “Bruno,” which sucked — just like most of this year’s film crop.

Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes looked promising — until I saw the trailer. Holmes is not a swashbuckler, and Guy Ritchie isn’t much of a director. As for “Avatar” … I’ll let others indulge James Cameron’s nerdy fantasies. “Up in the Air” looks okay, but I suspect it’s overrated. Don’t even bring up “The Blind Side.”

And this is the year the Academy has chosen to add five additional Best Picture nominees?

a prediction for 2010

Iran’s corrupt and oppressive regime will fall. Recorded 12/27/09:
Andrew Sullivan has ongoing coverage of the latest upheaval in Iran. Curiously, Drudge has nothing.

pegging obama

NYT columnist Ross Douthat understands what most of Obama’s critics, left and right, fail to grasp.

Both right and left have had trouble processing Obama’s institutionalism. Conservatives have exaggerated his liberal instincts into radicalism, ignoring the fact that a president who takes advice from Lawrence Summers and Robert Gates probably isn’t a closet Marxist-Leninist. The left has been frustrated, again and again, by the gulf between Obama’s professed principles and the compromises that he’s willing to accept, and some liberals have become convinced that he isn’t one of them at all.

atlantans survive brush with freezing temps

Odd that I own an ice scraper for my windshield. Odder still that I’ve had to use it every day this week.

Yep, it’s cold, but some of my fellow Atlantans are taking things a bit far, bundling up as if they’re Nanook of the North braving the Canadian arctic.

the decade’s worst introductions

Ten years ago most of us had no idea who the following people or things were. If only it had stayed that way.

  1. Sarah Palin (and we thought W. was overmatched)
  2. “American Idol” (think of all the crappy music it’s unleashed upon a non-discriminating public)
  3. Paris Hilton (she paved the way for untalented celebutards like the Kardashian gals)
  4. Alberto Gonzalez (and we thought W. was unqualified)
  5. Glenn Beck (and we thought Rush was obnoxious)
  6. Keith Olbermann (self-serving sanctimony is not the sole province of conservative blowhards)
  7. Kanye West (the poster child for excessive ego and overrated ability)
  8. Bravo (spreading toxic gay stereotypes, one reality show at a time)
  9. Mark Teixeira (Braves fans will understand)
  10. Dustin Lance Black (Malcontent readers will understand)
  11. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hugo Chavez, tie (duh)
