thugs on patrol

The BIG question going forward: Should the U.S. engage an outlaw government, and if so, do we risk legitimizing a fragile regime?

Thank goodness we have Barry O in charge. He will sweet talk the regime into being good people and working with us. Plus, as you know due to 1953 we really shouldn’t say anything. Isn’t Biden supposed to be the backstop on foreign issues for this administration? Maybe they have some super smart 31-year old working on this as they do with the auto industry – better yet like the auto guy – the 31 year old probably has zero foreign experience, but maybe they saw a foreign film or two in college and has actually dined at a Persian restaurant.

How is that hope and change working out for everyone so far?

If only Bush and Cheney were still around to save us.

Bush and Cheney are gone and never coming back. Obama and Biden are in charge – it is their show. Plus isn’t dissent patriotic?

How the U.S. should relate to thug regimes is a serious question and I welcome a discussion on it.

But this whole “Obama is soft” meme is nonsense.

We’ve sent billions annually to Mubarak’s Egypt since 1980 or so. And we spend way more on protecting Saudi Arabia — a country so undemocratic its the king’s surname. And don’t forget, Saddam Hussein was an ally of the U.S. while he committed his worst atrocities.

If the best way to avoid war with Iran or put some limits or monitoring on their nuclear program is to sit and talk, it makes sense to sit and talk.

The repression in Iran horrifies me. I have relatives walking in those protests. I am a democrat (lowercase d) who wants very much for the clerics ruling Iran to cede to secular rule.

But if Khamenei/Ahmadinejad emerge from the current struggle on top, what would be accomplished by refusing to at least discuss the possibility of a comprehensive peace/normalization settlement?

And what would be lost by talking? The U.S. is friendly with regimes that are every bit as awful as Iran’s.

We will talk, but nothing will happen except Iran will have nukes soon. Either Israel will have to do the world’s dirty work and will be condemned in public, but thanked in private or there will be mass nuclear proliferation in the Mideast. Either alternative should be fun.

BO did step up in Honduras he sides with Chavez again.
