"While the race baiting at the rally should be condemned, it is not a time to trash every gay and lesbian person disappointed by the passage of proposition 8"

I agree.

Like when a Palin supporter allegedly shouts "Kill him" (which the Secret Service denies even happened) we shouldn't jump to criticze Palin, Republicans or the Right? Or is this only reserved for certain protected groups?

Oddly enough, a blog post I've had sitting in my Draft folder for over a year now is how I've noticed black people being prejudiced against gays. My evidence had only been anecdotal as well but the 70% support from black voters for Prop 8 kind of supports this. I have no real other comment.

There's always been a pretty clear tension in the Democratic coalition between blacks and gays. California just happened to put that in bold relief with a ballot that included Obama and Prop 8 -- each bloc had a passionate stake in turning out the vote. Turns out there's no dovetail.

A shame about the invective hurling. I would have opposed Prop 8, but I agree that it's a relatively secondary civil right. Gays in Cali can still own a home together, raise a child, leave a will. Still, it's instructive to see this tension brought to light -- all the better to deal with it.

Point taken, but I didn't intend to suggest such racism was commonplace. Note: "The reaction from some gays ..."

Perhaps we're not all shamed by it, but we need to acknowledge it. Racism is a problem in the gay community and it should be confronted, not ignored.

Shouting racial slurs is wrong and stupid. But it does not shame ten percent of the population.
Rodonline seems to be the prime source of information for this incident. (If you look down the page at rod on line, you will see an ad for something called "thugboys 4 lyfe".) He does not report what percentage of the crowd was indulging in this shameful behavior. I strongly suspect it was a small part of the crowd.
There have been other rallies in California regarding the passage of Prop 8. Here is a report from the huffington post about a rally that seemed to go well.
