“It’s America, Dude, Learn the Rules”

Ah, “Ghost World.” Repetition does it justice. I remain convinced, after probably a dozen viewings, that it’s the best movie of the 21st Century. The competition includes: “City of God,” “The Lives of Others,” “21 Grams,” “Team America: World Police” and “Y tu mama, tambien.” I’m sure I’ve left some out, but, while noting the limits of my memory, the movies listed definitely belong within my Top 10 of the last seven years.

Fill in my blanks, if you dare.

Now, your moment of Doug.

Is The Anchorman Anti-Mormon?

A research firm has been making anti-Romney, anti-Mormon calls to Iowa Republicans praising John McCain.

McCain denies it. I believe him: He’s neither stupid nor sleazy.

Romney, on the other hand …

How very strange that the firm in question is based in Utah.

One of its dialers, Amanda Earnshaw, has maxed out to Romney for the primary. The company’s founder, Ron Lindorf (he sold it years ago), is noted here as a founder of the BYU Business School.

Meanwhile, Romney is blaming the McCain-Feingold legislation. Huh? I’m still trying to make sense of that one.

What does make sense is that Romney is looking to create sympathy for his religious views by having supporters pretend to attack it. Then he can pin the blame on his opponents. The evidence certainly points in that direction.

Why We Speak Out

Media_httpatlmalconte_dqclm

To those who say we shouldn’t criticize Iran, I say don’t you look foolish right about now.

This is truly great news:

Amid international criticism ignited by a crusading journalist, Iran’s chief justice has spared the life of a young man who had been sentenced to be executed as the result of a cousin’s accusations of homosexual acts years earlier.

Ayatollah Seyed Mahmoud Hashemi Sharudi nullified the imminent death sentence of Makvan Mouloodzadeh, 21, for violations of Iranian law and Islamic teachings, Saeid Eghbali, the defendant’s attorney, told msnbc.com this week.

Had Sharudi not intervened, Mouloodzadeh would have joined hundreds of his fellow Iranians, some of them just children when they committed their alleged crimes, who are hanged each year in jail yards and public squares. The executions are often carried out via a method designed to enhance and prolong their suffering: A rope is placed around the condemned person’s neck and he or she is hoisted from the ground with an industrial crane.

I’m stunned, pleasantly so. Let this be a lesson to keep the pressure on human rights violators, wherever they are. It’s clear now the world listens.

Bad Lede Du Jour

Hillary Rodham Clinton showed she knows how to use the roughhouse tactics of the political boys club.

Two weeks after a rocky presidential debate performance where she appeared at times both defensive and evasive, the New York senator came into Thursday’s Democratic forum poised, confident and ready to rumble.

Hey, Beth Fouhy, did you run your story past Mark Penn for approval? What “roughhouse tactics” are you referring to? Hillbot was asked tough questions, and she booted. Gender was not an issue. Apparently it is to you.

McCain On Torture

Defiant, the way I like him:

Media_httpatlmalconte_nxfof

“One of the things that kept us going when I was in prison in North Vietnam was that we knew that if the situation were reversed, that we would not be doing to our captor what they were doing to us.”

McCain is alone among the candidates for the GOP nomination. Macho posturing is in, experience — real, actual experience — not so much.

A few days later, in New Hampshire, Mr. McCain was asked about reports that Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, was made to give up vital information only after being waterboarded.

Mr. McCain said he did not believe that to be the case. While the C.I.A. might have left that impression, he said, the F.B.I. disagreed.

It has also been reported that Mr. Mohammed “confessed” to plotting to kill former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter as well as Pope John Paul II, leading interrogators to believe he was telling them whatever he thought they wanted to hear.

It’ll be a sad day when Republicans choose Rudy or The Anchorman over McCain. Either we get the nominees we deserve, or the system is broken. I say both.

A Card Sure to Be Dealt

Why even bother placing odds on whether Barry Bonds will claim to be a victim of racism? You know it’s coming. Bonds is without shame.

Whether he should’ve been indicted is one thing — if people want to destroy their bodies, that’s their business. Not that he shouldn’t be punished … by Major League Baseball. Make that, should’ve been. But baseball’s inept commissioner looked the other way. Everything the sport is doing now comes 10 years too late.

I do wish the feds had moved faster, if only to have kept Bonds from breaking Hank Aaron’s HR record. No doubt there should be an asterisk by Bonds’ name now.
