Everything is fine. Nothing to see here

Who’s to blame for the violence in Burma? According to the state-controlled media, Buddhist Monks are the source:

The government has been striving day and night together with the people for the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed discipline-flourishing democratic nation.

As the government has been endeavouring to ensure stability of State, community peace, the rule of law and national development that are the main requirements, the national races in all regions are practically enjoying the fruits of national peace and development.

However, saboteurs from inside and outside the nation and some foreign radio stations, who are jealous of national peace and development, have been making instigative acts through lies to cause internal instability and civil commotion. Hence, some members of the Sangha, anti-government groups and saboteurs were staging protest walks

Much has been written recently about Hillbot’s manufactured, Phyllis Diller-like cackle, deftly cataloged by Jon Stewart. Did I say cackle? As in, a witch’s cackle. What an obviously sexist implication:

Excuse me? How should a woman laugh? The inherent sexism in these characterizations should be obvious. And the point needs to be made that this is not really about how Hillary laughs because however she laughed, it would be criticized. If she snickered, “tee-heed”, gleefully clapped her hands or raucously bellowed, all would be jumped on as inappropriate. As Ann at Feministing writes, “If they weren’t using witch or schoolgirl allusions to describe the laugh, they’d no doubt be calling it “mannish.”

These are the humorless prigs who will be empowered by a Hillary victory. If you must vote for a robot, choose wisely — choose Awesome-O.

Christopher Hitchens presents a clear case:

Those who care or purport to care about human rights must start to discuss this problem in plain words. Is there an initiative to save the un-massacred remains of the people of Darfur? It will be met by a Chinese veto. Does anyone care about Robert Mugabe treating his desperate population as if it belonged to him personally? China is always ready to help him out. Are the North Koreans starved and isolated so that a demented playboy can posture with nuclear weapons? Beijing will give the demented playboy a guarantee. How long can Southeast Asia bear the shame and misery of the Burmese junta? As long as the embrace of China persists. The identity of Tibet is being obliterated by the deliberate importation of Chinese settlers. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a man who claims even to know and determine the sex lives of his serfs (by the way, the very essence of totalitarianism), is armed and financed by China.

Free speech 1, hurt feelings 0

Kell High’s student newspaper published a column characterizing homosexuals as victims of reproductive error or an unusual upbringing. And no one’s being hauled into sensitivity training. Nor removing copies of the paper from the school. The student who wrote the offensive piece isn’t even being disciplined.

Score one for free speech, even though some students have no idea what that grand idea entails.

Sophomore Kurt Webster said Monday he was surprised the student paper chose to publish such a controversial article. “It should not have been in the paper,” he said. “It could hurt people’s feelings.”

Opinions, even nutty ones, should be debated, not censored lest they hurt fragile sensitivities.

Principal Trudie Donovan said Monday that she had reviewed the article before it was published last Friday, but said she had no authority to censor it. “My job is the safety and security of the school, not censorship,” she said.

Good for Donovan. Let’s hope the various indignation councils don’t attempt to corrupt a valuable lesson.
