Gays to boycott the gayest movie of the summer?

I’m in — then again, I had no plans to see “Hairspray,” starring self-hater extrodinairre John Travolta.

“Travolta, a prominent Scientologist, has no business reprising an iconic gay role, given his [religion’s] stance on gay issues,” notes Kevin Naff, managing editor of the gay-oriented Washington Blade. “It’s well known that Scientology rejects gays and lesbians as members and even operates reparative therapy clinics to ‘cure’ homosexuality.”

Travolta plays mom Edna Turnblad in the flick — a role originally played by drag queen Divine.

They shouldn’t be remaking John Waters movies anyway — although I wouldn’t mind seeing Travolta eat shit (not for the squeamish).

Internet fraud

PerezhiltonThough I frequent his site, I can’t figure how Perez Hilton doesn’t get slapped with a lawsuit. Rules of attribution may not apply overseas, but they do (did?) here. The guy lifts considerable material — paging TMZ — without repercussion. No one’s going to take the new media seriously if they don’t adhere to basic journalistic tenets.

Not that I’m giving Hilton any professional cred; he’s merely a product of his own spin, certified by an old media desperate to appear relevant. (And have you noticed how forgiving he is to celebs who indulge him?)

Inconsequential though he may be, Hilton sets a troubling example. Someone needs to make an example out of him.

McCain’s toast

God bless him, but McCain’s politically tone deaf:

“If I am the nominee of the party, I will put California in play and compete for it, including the Bay Area. I have addressed many issues and have taken positions that I think people in the Bay Area agree with, especially climate change,” he said, speaking after a small breakfast in Union Square.

That’ll appeal to the base.

The madness continues

GENARLOW WILSON FREED

Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker has appealed Monday’s ruling releasing Genarlow Wilson, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for receiving consensual oral sex in 2003 from a 15-year-old girl when he was 17.

Baker contends the judge overstepped his authority in reducing Wilson’s felony conviction to a misdemeanor.

“I just got off the phone with him,” B.J. Bernstein angrily told reporters as Wilson’s grim-faced mother quietly sat nearby. “He has now heard about the judge’s opinion. Literally, people at the prison were saying, ‘You are going home today. Congratulations. I want to say goodbye to you.’ And I just had to tell that child he is staying there, that we don’t have a bond for him, that we can’t get him out.”

Baker may be justly concerned with precedent, but hasn’t Wilson suffered enough at the hands of overzealous prosecutors?
