See what I have to deal with?

It ain’t easy being a gay contrarian, or, as one idiot refers to me, a self-loathing homosexual:

Once upon a time, gay men were in one of two camps: Judy Garland or Ethel Merman. But times have changed, and now there are two very different camps: The Golden Girls guys versus Designing Women divas.

I never really watched either show, but if forced to choose — since I have no other option, as per usual with the petty queer establishment — I’d have to go with the cast that included Bea Arthur. Now Maude was a dame I could get behind!

Blaming the victims

I’ve heard callers — on three different conservative talk shows — accuse the Virginia Tech students of cowardice for not fighting back against Cho Seung-Hui (with no rebuke from the hosts). Seriously.

(Paraphrasing) “Why didn’t they gang tackle him or something, Rush?” Limbaugh went on to haphazardly blame the “wussification” of America’s public school students. I’ll agree that our educaton system does a crappy job preparing students for the harsh realities of adulthood, but let’s retain some perspective.

When someone comes at you with a Glock 19 and a .22-caliber pistol, your first — and, I’m assuming, only — instinct isn’t to wrestle him to the ground. You’d run. Run fast. I’d like to think I would be heroic in that situation, but how? It’s futile for the defenseless to try to defend.

You gotta wonder about the mindset of people who point fingers at the innocent dead and those in mourning.

*Neal Boortz owns up to being an asshole (via Fresh Loaf):

How far have we advanced in the wussification of America? I am now under attack by the left for wondering aloud why these students did so little to defend themselves. It seems that standing in terror waiting for your turn to be executed was the right thing to do, and any questions as to why 25 students didn’t try to rush and overpower Cho Seung-Hui are just examples of right wing maniacal bias. Surrender — comply — adjust. The doctrine of the left.

Amazing, isn’t it? Even the suggestion that young adults should actually engage in an act of self defense brings howls of protest.

I’m waiting to hear an answer as to how these college students should’ve defended themselves. Certainly there was a superhero among the lot who could catch bullets with his bare hands.

Poppy Bush to share stage with gay-baiting, Jew-hating cult leader

Talk about your underreported stories:

FishbowlDC has learned that George H.W. Bush will deliver the Keynote Address at the Washington Times’ May 17 gala at the National Building Museum.

From a letter from Washington Times LLC President Thomas McDevitt: “The evening includes a special reception; the inaugural Founding Spirit Awards; dinner; and a Founder’s Address from the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, whose commitment to the need for diverse viewpoints in the nation’s capital during the Cold War era led to the launch of the Washington Times on May 17, 1982.”

This is the same Rev. Moon who, according to The Plank, “declared himself humanity’s ‘savior, Messiah, Returning Lord, and True Parent’ … ‘Hitler and Stalin have found strength in my teachings, mended their ways and been reborn as new persons.’

Moon also said that Jews deserved the Holocaust and called gays “dirty, dung-eating dogs.” He doesn’t like Caucasians, either: “The white race are the descendants of polar bears. Their ancestors were Viking pirates. Wherever the white race goes there is always bloodshed.”

But hey, he publishes a conservative newspaper that supports W., so why fuss over the details?

Bad news from Iraq

Four large bombs exploded in mostly Shiite areas of Baghdad on Wednesday, killing at least 157 people and wounding scores as violence climbed toward levels seen before the U.S.-Iraqi campaign to pacify the capital began two months ago.

In the deadliest of the attacks, a parked car bomb detonated in a crowd of workers at the Sadriyah market in central Baghdad, killing at least 112 people and wounding 115, said Raad Muhsin, an official at Al-Kindi Hospital where the victims were taken.

A police official confirmed the toll, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

Among the dead were several construction workers who had been rebuilding the mostly Shiite marketplace after a bombing destroyed many shops and killed 137 people there in February, the police official said.

Repeat: this is bad news. I’m not going Hannity on you here by saying people who don’t support the war are anti-American, but I have noticed a disturbing trend of self-satisfaction every time grim reports surface from Iraq: “Ha ha, I knew the surge wouldn’t work!” Most Americans doubted it would, but some seem more than happy to be right. I’d rather be wrong, in this case.

Iraq is a mess now, and it will likely be a worse mess when we leave. Obviously, in retrospect, we got in over our heads, but at this point I’d prefer a rational debate on how best to solve the problem we’ve caused than to engage in a game of “I told ya so.”

Great moments in comedy

This one involves the funniest man who ever lived and one of the most clever movies ever made, “The Producers” (the original):

Sellers

The reason the film got released at all was due to the intervention of Peter Sellers. After Brooks completed the picture, he was told by Executive Producer Joseph E. Levine that the film, which was then called “Springtime for Hitler”, would not be released; Levine thought it was in poor taste and not very funny. While Sellers was in Hollywood making “I Love You, Alice B. Toklas!” (1968), he liked to have films screened for his friends and himself for entertainment. One night this film was screened and Sellers loved it. When he heard it would not be released he began calling Levine and eventually convinced him to release it, the only compromise being that the title of the film be changed to “The Producers”.

Scientologists have come to Blacksburg, seeking new recruits. Like I said, shameless:

HollywoodInterrupted.com’s Mark Ebner brands the Scientologists as “vultures” who are “hindering legitimate, heroic rescue efforts with their spurious ‘therapies,’” such as a “touch assist” – a light massage, which, Ebner says, is “supposed to distract them from their tragedy. It’s a form of mini-hypnosis.”

“They did this at Ground Zero [after 9/11],” says Ross. “They did this in New Orleans [after Hurricane Katrina]. They look for very high-profile disaster that can be milked for photo ops” to promote the Church.

Church official Sylvia Stannard tells us that about 20 “ministers” are in Blacksburg, Va. “We’re doing a lot of emotional counseling, which is kind of our speciality,” says Stannard. “We prohibit our people from proselytizing,” but she adds, “they are going to tell them they are Scientologists” and “they will answer questions.”

The church, which preaches against all psychiatric pharmaceuticals, has already seized upon early reports that Cho Seung-Hui, the gunman accused of Monday’s bloodbath, may have been taking antidepressents.

Stannard says the killings demonstrate “these mind-altering drugs” make “you numb to other people’s suffering. You really have to be drugged up to coldly kill people like that.”

The cult said the same thing about the Columbine killers, but as it turns Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were OFF their meds went they conducted their murderous spree.

Manufactured fame

Ever wonder how little-known reality stars maintain a degree of celebrity? A “Laguna Beach” grad shows how it’s done:

Kristin Cavallari, the “Laguna Beach” reality “star” – we use the word loosely – has come up with a new way to make some money. Like Paris Hilton, she’s charging club owners for personal appearances that might produce publicity for their venues in celebrity-obsessed weekly magazines. She was clever enough to spark a bidding war between Tao Las Vegas and Pure Las Vegas for the rights to hold her 21st birthday event – and bids are already up to $100,000. Cavallari has also mastered a method originated by Jessica Simpson and her father, Joe. She has a friend who fronts as a “personal photographer” and gets the “big photos” of her making out with pal Nick Zano. She then sells the images to the tabs, who give her a percentage.

Just like Lana Turner.
