I’ve heard callers — on three different conservative talk shows — accuse the Virginia Tech students of cowardice for not fighting back against Cho Seung-Hui (with no rebuke from the hosts). Seriously.
(Paraphrasing) “Why didn’t they gang tackle him or something, Rush?” Limbaugh went on to haphazardly blame the “wussification” of America’s public school students. I’ll agree that our educaton system does a crappy job preparing students for the harsh realities of adulthood, but let’s retain some perspective.
When someone comes at you with a Glock 19 and a .22-caliber pistol, your first — and, I’m assuming, only — instinct isn’t to wrestle him to the ground. You’d run. Run fast. I’d like to think I would be heroic in that situation, but how? It’s futile for the defenseless to try to defend.
You gotta wonder about the mindset of people who point fingers at the innocent dead and those in mourning.
*Neal Boortz owns up to being an asshole (via Fresh Loaf):
How far have we advanced in the wussification of America? I am now under attack by the left for wondering aloud why these students did so little to defend themselves. It seems that standing in terror waiting for your turn to be executed was the right thing to do, and any questions as to why 25 students didn’t try to rush and overpower Cho Seung-Hui are just examples of right wing maniacal bias. Surrender — comply — adjust. The doctrine of the left.
Amazing, isn’t it? Even the suggestion that young adults should actually engage in an act of self defense brings howls of protest.
I’m waiting to hear an answer as to how these college students should’ve defended themselves. Certainly there was a superhero among the lot who could catch bullets with his bare hands.
