This is a brain on no drugs. Any questions?

George W. appears intent on funneling boatloads of cash into wars he can’t win. Now he’s asking for more funding to crusade against marijuana. His weapon of choice? Useless propaganda:

President Bush has proposed a significant jump in funding for an anti-drug advertising campaign that government-funded research shows is at best useless and at worst has increased drug use among some teens.

The administration has asked for a 31 percent increase in funding for the advertising campaign that a nearly five-year study concluded had increased the likelihood that all teens would smoke marijuana. The White House proposal would increase the program’s budget to $130 million over the next year.

Pity the poor white QB

I heard this second hand, but it sounds like something the fat doctor shopper would say. Apparently Rush Limbaugh thinks Bears QB Rex Grossman was treated unfairly by the media because he is white and there’s a bias against Caucasian signal callers. You may recall a few years back when Limbaugh said the media had propped up Donovan McNabb, who’s been to multiple Pro Bowls, because of his skin color.

“I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well,” Limbaugh said

I guess Limbaugh missed all the fawning praise directed Saint Peyton Manning’s way. Or the torrent of negative criticism Michael Vick has received.

Idle worship

A sampling of some of the comments left in an AJC guestbook commemorating Anna Nicole Smith:

My condolences go out to the family. At a time where she was grieving the most from the loss of her son Daniel and dealing with the battles that life had thrown at her she still stood strong. She was a great woman and one that had a heart of gold. Now she has no more worries because God will take good care of her. It is very sad to see such a great and humble person pass so early. Howard has been an instrumental part of Anna’s life. I pray that all works out for Baby Anna! My prayers are to all of you!

I can not say in words how deeply a stranger to me and her life has affected me. I felt your pain and anguish everytime I seen you since Daniel died. As the tears fall for you may you feel the warmth and sunshine of being with Daniel. And, may God lead your daughter to where she belongs. You will not only be remembered but you will be missed. God Bless You Anna, and give you peace.
–Judith Leahy (Chicago, IL)

Rest now sweet angel, your suffering has ended.
Amen

You have shown so many people that you can achieve whatever it is you are looking for. You were strong with all that you had been through! I know your daughter will be just fine as I am sure you and her brother are watching over her. I will miss you! May God bless your family!

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
–Peggy Pedersen (Columbia, SC)

I wonder if Elton John is working on a new remake of “Candle in the Wind” — “Goodbye yellow rose … all the papers had to say, is that Anna, choked on her own vomit.”

Desperate Republicans

Why not just dig up Richard Nixon’s corpse?

I dreamt, for one fleeting moment, about a Rumsfeld-Bolton ticket in 2008. Can you imagine how much Prozac the New York Times editors would consume if that dream came true? R-B in ’08?

The dream apparently has a lot of support among Redstaters:

*Bold and brave at the same time. The Dems look like a clown act in comparison. Sign me up.

*I think what we really need in this campaign is more Republican/Conservative diversity, and I can’t think of anyone who would shake up the field and focus the mind more positively than Donald Rumsfeld.

*Now, there is a ticket I’d be behind 100% :-)

*It’s almost a utopia. Well done, bravo, ect ect. I can think of no ticket that would have the moonbats litterally speachless for a time and then evaporate in a huge cloud of hatred induced implosions.

Republicans need to learn that pissing off the media isn’t much of a campaign strategy. They seem destined to implode in ’08.

U.S. no longer cornering the market on Christian fundamentalism

Kenya’s world-class collection of hominid bones – primates belonging to a family of which the modern human being is the only species still in existence – is at the centre of a silent but intense war being waged by a section of the evangelical churches.

The priceless National Museums of Kenya (NMK) fossils pointing to man’s evolution risk being relegated to the abyss as a section of the Church renews its war on science insisting that the evolution theory contradicts the biblical story of creation.

Media_httpatlmalconte_taxde

Bishop Boniface Adoyo of Nairobi Pentecostal Church (NPC), Christ is the Answer Ministries, is championing the ‘hide-the-fossils’ campaign, which has left scientists and historians perplexed. …

Adoyo, the Chairman of Evangelical Alliance of Kenya that represents 35 churches with a membership of six million faithful, says the theory confuses children who frequent the museum on educational tours. “I’m worried that children will believe we evolved from monkeys. Yet this is not the truth that’s killing our faith,” he says.

Will someone please tell the Christian right that ignorance is not a good recruiting tool? To be fair, at least they’re not attempting to blow up the museum.
