Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin, was shot dead on Saturday at her apartment block in central Moscow, police said.

"According to initial information she was killed by two shots when leaving the lift. Neighbors found her body," a police source told Reuters. Police found a pistol and four rounds in the lift.

Politkovskaya, a 48-year-old mother of two, won international fame and numerous prizes for her dogged pursuit of rights abuses by Putin’s government, particularly in the violent southern province of Chechnya.

"The first thing that comes to mind is that Anna was killed for her professional activities. We don’t see any other motive for this terrible crime," said Vitaly Yaroshevsky, a deputy editor of the newspaper where Politkovskaya worked.

Cap du jour

Tracy and Hepburn. Bogart and Bacall. Allen and Keaton. Danejessica

Now we’re stuck with Dane Cook and Jessica Simpson. The cultural de-evolution continues (on the bright side, the irrationally famous duo’s new movie opened poorly at the box office).

Here’s a Hobson’s choice for you: "Employee of the Month" or an "According to Jim" marathon?

The Evil Empire collapses … again

Ha ha ha ha ha ha … ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Hillary_yankees

The Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs today, and I feel fine. Now if only the Dodgers can bounce back against the Mets tonight. Outside of the Braves winning, nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing the overpriced and overhyped New York teams lose. Especially the squad in pinstripes.

Coming soon: my uber-trivial all-hottie baseball postseason team. (Hint: Barry Zito’s on the mound. Derek Jeter might’ve been the SS, but THE YANKEES LOST.)

Did I mention the Yankees lost?

Bigotry unmasked

Even in mainstream conservative outlets like the Wall Street Journal, homophobia persists —

Where does post-modern American ethics place Mark Foley’s homosexuality on a scale of 1 to 10 — a 1 being just another gay guy and a 10 being a compulsive, predatory sex offender?

What the hell does that mean? Do heterosexual predators taint all straight people?

Foley’s actions have nothing to do with homosexuality, yet many on the right can’t help raising his nature as a contributing factor to the ex-congressman’s slimy behavior. Let’s call it the “recruitment card,” because, as you know, we can’t wait to get our hands on all those confused little boys.

Hastert apologists, like former Speaker Newt Gingrich, claim the GOP leadership was reluctant to confront Foley because they feared being labeled “homophobic.” By whom? I don’t know any gay people who think what Foley did was okay. Treat all predators equal — regardless of their orientation.

There’s plenty of queers who would welcome a truly small government political party. The Republicans ain’t it. They sound increasingly like George Wallace did when he referenced African-Americans. And that’s just one more reason they’re overdue to lose power — until the Democrats shoot themselves in the foot, as inevitable as yet another post about Mark Foley.

(If this bullshit keeps up I’ll be forced to buy a rainbow flag.)
