Ruminations on inane declarations

As “Gay Pride” commences across the country, it’s time I stated my beef –

While I appreciate the intent, “gay pride” is semantically challenged. Why should I be proud of winning the washer and dryer combo on the genetic wheel of fortune? I didn’t do anything. Shouldn’t pride be based on individual accomplishment?

What about black pride, you ask? Got a problem with that? Sure do. Same thing. Same problem.

But I understand. While it should be called “not ashamed to be gay (or black) day,” that’s too clunky of a phrase to adorn decorative banners. Still, pride is a bit of an overstatement.

  1. I think it’s okay to be proud of whatever innate qualities one possesses…I dunno if parades and t-shirts declaring such are necessary…but I do think they’re fun to watch! : )
